Tell us about your book, Klopp Actually.
It’s a little diary of an imaginary relationship with someone who is intoxicatingly sensible. A little reminder to myself that I know how to be practical and curb my anxiety but sometimes it’s easier to take advice from someone else.
What inspired you to write a book imagining being married to Jurgen Klopp?
I was idly tweeting nonsense about being married to him because I’d seen him interviewed about Coronavirus and he was devastatingly brilliant. He just said “I’m a football manager, why are you asking me?” and I was gobsmacked. I thought he was brilliant.
What made you decide a book was the best way to tell this story?
It let me expand on the world and create little scenarios without taking the book or myself too seriously. It was fun to write sexy literature that wasn’t all about looks and graphic depictions but about domestic actions that make you feel tingly.
How much has the story changed between the original Twitter thread that inspired the book and the book itself?
It changed a lot to sustain the longer form. The tweets were very short and snappy and sweet and to make it into a book I had to draw on other threads and weave more depth into the world of Laura and Klopp. It meant I could explore more commonalities of domestic life.
What is your secret to writing a good comedic novel?
Er… well, I don’t know really! I was lenient with myself. I wrote as best as I could as often as I could but I really didn’t try and push myself when the creativity wasn’t there.
What do you hope people take away from your book?
I hope they take fun and comfort. I hope that people have a good laugh with it but also see some of the ways I’ve talked about living with anxiety and feel less like insecurity has to rule their lives.
Are you planning on writing any more books in the future?
Yes! I’m currently writing another YouTube adventure plot where the audience choose the story by voting at the end of each chapter and shaping what I write for the next installment. Then I am going to be writing another novel for Two Roads to be published in 2022 – working title is Pivot at the moment but it’s very embryonic so far.
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Just start writing. Even if it’s a blank page and you’re just writing the words “I am writing”, start writing that and see what happens. It might go nowhere but at the very worst you just had a nice time doing some writing and if you don’t want to spend an hour writing then don’t be a writer.
Klopp Actually will be available in hardback, eBook and audio on September 3rd.
