“Ideas are born when they’re ready.” | Stuart Dunlop explores his unquitable, meandering creative journey through comedy, improv and more

Tell us about your style of comedy.

A two-way street of anxiety-fuelled self-deprecation. “I’m weird, and that’s funny. But we’re all weird, and that’s funny, too.”

How did you get into comedy?

My good friend Edward Roworth inspired me, and I then took improv classes while living in Berlin. Proof that Germans (and Southerners) have a sense of humour.

What is your favourite joke you’ve ever been told?

Not a joke, per se, but one thing I always think back to is the amazing improviser Aiden Pyne starting a scene by sincerely asking if a shoe shop sold any shoes. For some reason, that’s stuck with me.

Who is your favourite comedian we’ve never heard of?

Lizzy Lenco is a massive inspiration to me. Jet-black but optimistic humour and one of the strongest and sweetest people I’ve ever met.

As well as stand-up, improv and theatre, you also run a live-streamed quiz and write a narrative podcast. What is your secret to juggling so many different projects?

It’s less of a juggling act and more of an addiction. Creative projects are my Class-A drug and I just can’t quit.

How do you decide what medium is best suited for an idea you have?

By realising my strengths and limitations. Kio & Maxi became an audio project because I can’t even draw stick figures and I never shut up!

Do you have any exciting new developments on the horizon for anything you’re currently working on?

Kio & Maxi has some extended-universe stuff in the works, and I’m planning to squeeze some more improv into that distended, saturated market pretty soon.

What do you hope people take away from your work?

Whatever they’ve enjoyed from it. We need more positivity in culture, and that starts with encouraging individual happiness. Ooh, and that I’m a bit weird.

What advice do you have for anyone hoping to get involved with similar creative projects?

Ideas are born when they’re ready. And love the process as much, if not more, than the finished product.
